Welcome to Stoats
Year 1 is the first year of children following the National Curriculum. It is a huge change from the play based EYFS curriculum which they have followed in their pre-schools and in the Squirrels’ class. With this in mind, the Stoats team are engaging, adaptive, enthusiastic and fun-loving in order to support the children as they transition from the Early Years curriculum to Key Stage 1. We follow all aspects of the National Curriculum and the children are engaged with their learning through a creative approach, providing them with opportunities to extend their learning and deepen their understanding through guided and independent work. We cover many topics across the year including Digital Animation in computing, gymnastics in PE, Explorers past and present in History and Animals in science.
Children will continue to participate in the Little Wandle - reading and phonics. The scheme uses phonics to teach children to read so they can move from learning to read, to reading to learn, giving them access to the pleasures that reading can give. They will participate in daily phonics lessons and in guided reading groups three times a week, then bringing their weekly book home to keep practicing. Phonics homework will be sent out each week.
Please feel free to speak to us if you have any questions or queries.
